Database Driven mapping
One use of maps at The Durango Herald was to query the database for recent articles that had latitude and longitude points associated with them, displaying news on a map with relevant information and links.
Using layers to evolve maps over time
During the large fire season of 2013, I updated KML files that rendered on a statewide map to show fire perimeters, road closures and shelter locations.
Crowd-sourced mapping applications
Another form of mapping used at The Durango Herald was to query readers for submissions. Over the years, we used the process to map potholes, collect images and information during major storms, or in this case, to solicit readers for a view of Christmas decorations. A user submission page populated a spreadsheet that generated the display map.
